As I mentioned in a previous post about matcha, not all matcha is equal. Most matcha lovers already know this. Before buying matcha online, it’s important to do some research. After all, we ingest the whole leaf, so checking the origin matters; especially with concerns about lead in Chinese tea and radiation in Japanese tea.
You can request radiation testing before purchasing tea online, but always do your own research first. I recommend purchasing matcha grown and processed entirely in Japan to ensure authenticity and safety. Lower-grade matcha often comes from China and is only processed in Japan, so it may not deliver the same quality.

Health Benefits of Matcha
Matcha is rich in polyphenols, which boost metabolism. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t have more caffeine than espresso. Its caffeine releases slowly, preventing crashes. Matcha is also packed with fiber, chlorophyll, and vitamins, including vitamin C, selenium, chromium, zinc, and magnesium. Incorporating matcha into your routine can be both delicious and healthy.
Another standout compound is L-theanine, an amino acid found almost exclusively in tea. L-theanine promotes relaxation and focus without drowsiness, making it perfect for staying sharp during workouts or long workdays. Many people combine L-theanine with caffeine (which matcha also contains) for sustained energy and mental clarity, without the jitters or crashes typical of coffee.
For fitness enthusiasts and bodybuilders, this means matcha can support better focus, improved mind-muscle connection, and recovery, especially when used as part of a balanced diet and workout routine.
Essential Matcha Tools
I recently bought a gift set from Ippodo that included a new whisk and a Chasen-tate (whisk stand). The Chasen-tate keeps your whisk in shape, so it lasts longer. Using proper tools can enhance your matcha experience and maintain its quality over time.
Tips for Enjoying Matcha
Introducing friends and family to matcha can be a challenge because of its bitter taste. It should be easier now that it’s truly popular. Trying several grades, especially ceremonial matcha, can help them appreciate its complexity. Like coffee, it takes time to adjust to the bitterness, but you’ll start noticing sweet, grassy, and smooth notes.

Also, remember that matcha has a shorter shelf life compared to black or oolong teas. Consume it quickly to enjoy its full flavor. I love to add it to vanilla ice-cream for a “Matcha Affogato”.
