Tea Gifts: Small, Thoughtful Gifts for Tea Lovers
Small tea gifts that get used: teas with a story, simple tools, a few bigger treats and the free part of the gift.
The best tea gifts are small. A big sampler box looks generous, but most of it ends up in the back of a cupboard. One good tea, one good tool or one nice cup gets used every day, and the person thinks of you every time. So here are the tea gifts I would actually give this year, from a few dollars to a real treat.

Tea gifts that tell a story
A tea with a story is better than a tea with a long list of flavours. When you hand it over, you also hand over something to talk about.
Lapsang souchong, for the person who likes campfires
Smoky, a bit wild and nothing like a normal breakfast tea. Magic Hour’s organic lapsang souchong is an easy way in. If they ask why it tastes like that, tell them about the Danish ships that carried it to Europe.
A Paris classic in a tin they will keep
Mariage Frères Marco Polo is the house’s most famous blend, a black tea with fruit and flower notes. The black tin is half the gift. Once it is empty, it becomes the tin for everything else.
A Russian-style Earl Grey
For someone who loves Earl Grey, Kusmi Anastasia adds lemon and orange blossom to a classic black tea. Kusmi started in Saint Petersburg in 1867, and you can read more about why Russians take their tea so seriously in my Russian tea culture post.
A trip to Vietnam in a box
The d’Annam discovery set is a sampler of Vietnamese teas, a country most tea drinkers skip. It goes well with my long read on tea in the Vietnam War, if your friend likes history with their cup.
A plain, honest Assam
On the other hand, not everyone wants a story. Some people just want a good strong cup. DONA’s Amber Assam is loose leaf, malty and costs about the same as a fancy coffee.

Small tools that make the ritual better
After all, tools are the gifts people use every single day. Pick one, not five.
- An infuser that doesn’t drip everywhere. The Hydro Flask tea infuser sits inside their bottle, so loose leaf works on the go.
- A glass for strong black tea. A tulip glass on a saucer, the shape used for tea from Turkey to Iraq. It makes even a teabag feel like an occasion.
- A matcha whisk. A bamboo matcha whisk is cheap and makes a real difference. For a bigger gift, there is the Fellow matcha set.
- A mug for outside. The Stanley camp mug, for the friend who drinks tea on walks, in the car or on a cold balcony.
- A carafe for the office. A Thermos carafe keeps a whole pot hot through a long meeting.

Bigger tea gifts, if you want to spoil them
Sometimes one big thing is still the right “small” gift, because it replaces something they use every day.
- A kettle with a temperature dial. The Fellow Stagg EKG lets you set the exact temperature, which matters a lot for green and white tea. Made In’s kettle is the stovetop option.
- A teapot that will outlive everyone. The Royal Copenhagen Blue Fluted teapot has the pattern the factory has painted since 1775. For Japanese teas, the Rishi Red Shudei Mogake Tokoname teapot is made from the clay of Tokoname, one of Japan’s oldest pottery towns.
- A shelf to keep it all. The Fellow Dona tea library is storage that looks good out on the counter.
The free part of the gift
Finally, whatever you pick, add a note. Something like: “Steep this when you need a reset.” It costs nothing, and it is often the part they keep.
And if you want to give a book instead, I keep a short list of the best books on the history of tea.
Questions about tea gifts
One good tea in a tin they will keep, or one tool they will use every day, such as an infuser, a matcha whisk or a nice glass. One well-chosen item usually lands better than a big sampler box.
A tea with a story they may not know, such as smoky lapsang souchong or a Vietnamese sampler, or a classic teapot like Royal Copenhagen Blue Fluted.
Small ones, yes. Big boxes often end up half used, so a set of three to five teas is usually better than twenty.
